Xeriscape Basics
What is xeriscape?
The word comes from "xeric", Latin for water thrifty, and "landscape". Xeriscape design means having a lush, growing environment while saving water. It does NOT
mean a sea of sand and gravel, and it is not a "zero" scape. Xeriscaping provides many good things. It reduces water use, promotes a healthy atmosphere, reduces turf area, provides cover for birds and wildlife, and can be a windbreak. In any arid environment, xeriscaping can create an oasis with low water use.
Why is it important?
Good question. In some parts of the U.S. and the world, water supply is at critical levels, and becoming more scarce. Some good examples are Phoenix and Albuquerque. Even areas with adequate rainfall are having problems providing enough treated water for their growing populations. Xeriscaping is a way to promote a green environment that saves fresh water resources- everywhere.
Will a drip system provide enough water?
Most definitely. In fact, many first time users overwater. Because drip does not blow away in the wind, most of the water goes directly where it is needed. Start at our recommended settings and your plants should do fine.
Common pitfalls:
Overwatering is the big one. Emitter placement is very important. Our simple guide sheets will show you how and where to place emitters, bubblers, and sprayers. And, whilst drip systems are very effective, they do need attention. One probably could set a system and leave it for the season, but it is not advised.
What about Freezing?
Good news. We have yet to see a drip system freeze break. There are so many escape routes for the water, and the tubing can swell. However- hard pipe, valves and filters must be emptied to prevent freeze breaks.

Subsurface Turf Irrigation Systems
We install Netafim subsurface turf irrigation systems for residential and commercial sites. These systems have no above ground water, rather water at the root zone. Originally designed for row crops, these systems have proven to be very reliable for turf if installed correctly. Subsurface systems typically use half the valves and half the water of conventional sprinkler systems. If water is at a premium for you, or you are in an area of high evaporation/wind loss, this may be the answer. Take a look at the Netafim website for more info on this technology. (netafimusa.com)
